A spring mattress acts as a shock absorber and this reduces the wear and tear of the mattress. So the fewer coils there are in the mattress, the thicker the springs get. Another thing about spring mattresses is that the foam covering the springs could shrink over time, making springs exert more effort in supporting the weight, thus making them susceptible to losing their shape or getting broken over time.
